Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship: Canadian Passengers in Isolation
The recent hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has raised concerns among health authorities and the public alike. Four Canadian passengers, including an Islander, have been quarantined on the South Island after arriving at Victoria International Airport (YYJ) on Sunday evening. While the virus is not considered a disease of pandemic potential, it is deemed very serious, with a 30-40% death rate.
The outbreak, which occurred on a Dutch cruise ship scheduled to tour the South Atlantic and Antarctica, has been making global headlines. The World Health Organization confirmed three deaths from the Andes Hantavirus, which is primarily spread by rodents but can also circulate through contact with an infected person. At least nine cases of the virus have been linked to the cruise.
The four Canadian passengers, a person in their 70s from the Island, a British Columbian in their 50s who lives abroad, and a couple in their 70s from Yukon, were met by Island Health public health workers for screening upon arrival. They were then transferred to pre-arranged locations to begin quarantining. Island Health did not confirm whether the passengers remained on the South Island for their isolation period or were relocated to another area.
Dr. Bonnie Henry, the Provincial Health Officer, stated that the passengers will be closely monitored for 42 days, the maximum incubation period for hantavirus, but will likely be completely isolated for only 21 days. The 42-day monitoring period began on Sunday, and Henry initially said the period began on May 6, but the timeline was updated in light of the fast onset of symptoms experienced by a French passenger, who is currently in critical condition.
Henry emphasized that the virus is not considered a disease of pandemic potential, but it is very serious. She called the next few days a "very critical phase of the incubation period" for the passengers. While all passengers from the cruise are considered high-risk for hantavirus, Henry said the four Canadians are on the "low-risk spectrum" of the heightened risk.
The outbreak has sparked discussions about the potential risks associated with international travel, especially in light of the virus's high death rate. It also highlights the importance of proper screening and monitoring for travelers, especially those who may have been exposed to the virus.
